Welcome to Wawona K-8 School!
It is my hope that you and your child will have a rewarding experience as a Lancer. Also, for school to be a place for children to learn and grow, it is essential to create an environment of mutual respect. We want Wawona to be a place to experience the excitement of learning, a place where the students, parents and school staff form a partnership. Working together, there is no limit to what we and our children can achieve. This parent/student handbook is only the introduction to your child’s school program. After reviewing it for general information, I encourage all parents and students to become actively involved in the Wawona experience.
Best Wishes for an exciting and rewarding school year.
Sincerely,
Delia Nuño

Wawona’s Two-Way Dual Immersion Program
Preschool-8th Grade
Celebrating Bilingualism:
The ability to speak, read, and write in both English and Spanish!
Two-Way Immersion is a challenging academic program, which offers students the exciting opportunity of being bilingual and biliterate and becoming academically successful in both English and Spanish. We are an additive bilingual program.
The Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program brings together students from English and Spanish language backgrounds to learn academic content through instruction in both languages. All students are provided with a standards-based curriculum with a focus on bilingual and biliterate academic achievement.
To achieve the goal of bilingual literacy, long term parental commitment is necessary to ensure that students remain in the program from Preschool through Eighth grade. To further promote success, students from both language backgrounds are integrated, leading to high levels of academic, social, and linguistic development. Over the years, students in a Two-Way Bilingual Immersion program not only achieve a high level of bilingual proficiency, but also become biliterate, acquiring academic content knowledge and skills in both languages. Students that participate in the program typically achieve high levels of proficiency on both district and state assessments and in both languages. Applications into the program must be submitted for lottery selection to the Transfers office no later than December 1of the previous year for which you are applying.
How does the Dual Immersion Program develop bilingual, culturally competent students?
The Dual Immersion Program combines students from two language groups and teaches them in both languages. The program includes balanced number of English, Spanish and bilingual students. Initially, students are taught the majority of the day in Spanish to ensure Spanish literacy by the end of 2nd grade. Students are also taught in English during their Academic English Language Development instructional block. Gradually, the language of instruction shifts from 90% in Spanish and 10% in English to a 50%-50% model in both target languages.
Wawona utilizes the 90/10 model for the language program.
